In 1998 a middle school in a small town of Whitwell, Tennessee started the Paper Clips Project . The objective was to collect 6.000.000 paper clips representing the estimated 6,000,000 Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The project received attention and support all over the world and eventually brought 30.000.000 paper clips. Among donors were Bill Clinton., George W. Bush, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks. Eventually a documentary about the project was filmed, and The Children’s Holocaust Memorial was built.
The inspiration for the “Young diplomat” was the case of Samantha Smith, who in the age of 10 wrote a letter to the sovereign leader of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov. She not only received a reply but also an letter inviting her to Moscow. Because of this she was called "America's Youngest Ambassador
