In November 1982 a fifth grade pupil wrote a letter to the Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Yuri Andropov:
Dear Mr. Andropov,
My name is Samantha Smith. I am ten years old. Congratulations on your new job. I have been worrying about Russia and the United States getting into a nuclear war. Are you going to vote to have a war or not? If you aren't please tell me how you are going to help to not have a war. This question you do not have to answer, but I would like to know why you want to conquer the world or at least our country. God made the world for us to live together in peace and not to fight.
Sincerely,
Samantha Smith

Today there seems to be no real threat of a great war but many countries make nuclear threats. Other countries keep their nuclear productions a secret waiting for an opportunity to use the weaponry against real or perceived enemies. It is important for the officials of countries with nuclear weapon s to know that children and young people are concerned and worried. We need every young person to write a letter opposing nuclear weapons. Send them to us. W e will take your messages and send them to world peace organizations and the officials of countries who are involved in nuclear proliferation. We will try will be to illustrate the pictures the art competition and then publish these in book form. The very best ones will awarded prizes.
